"Seth McCoy sat on the front deck of his cabin overlooking Deer Mountain near Estes Park, Colorado; Duke and Drake, his Irish setters, slept beside him. Seth saw the brightness in the north-eastern sky long before he felt the rumbling, and when the vibrations reached the cabin, the dogs woke up and whimpered.
"Seth had been reading from a book of Mediterranean folk tales, but he dropped it when he saw the flash. Fittingly, his bookmark rested on the story of seven boys of Ephesus who hid in a cave to escape the invaders of their city. The boys fell asleep for three hundred years with their dutiful dog standing guard over them, and when the sleepers later awoke, they found the world had changed."
